W-Soccer: SMU at South Carolina

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sat Sep 07, 2013 10:23 am

The Mustangs continue their travels through the Carolinas with a match at South Carolina Sunday at noon.

SMU is 3-2-0 after a 3-0 win over Davidson Friday night. The Gamecocks are 4-0-1 after a big 2-1 win at rival Clemson Friday night. South Carolina had not conceded in their first four games.

South Carolina also already has a signature win this season with a 1-0 win over Duke in Columbia.

So far this season, SMU has pounded some weaker teams and lost close ones to teams similar to us. Sunday seems like the perfect time to break that pattern!

Sunday will be the first meeting between SMU and South Carolina in program history.

Also of interest, the Gamecocks feature freshman forward Sophie Groff who played club soccer with the Dallas Texans on the same team as Talyor Barg, Taylor Jackson, and Kelsey Gorney.

Groff also played high school soccer with Lissi Lonsberry at Southlake Carroll.

Congratulations to Taylor Jackson for winning the SMU athlete of the week voting at the football game tonight. With Shelby Redman winning last week that makes women's soccer two for two this year!

SMU draws a penalty, but Rikki Clarke's attempt is saved.

Great pressure from SMU, but still down 1-0.

South Carolina cleans up a mess in the box and makes it 2-0 in the 80th minute.

The Mustangs fall to 3-3-0 after dropping another close one 2-0 at South Carolina. Missing another penalty obviously made a huge difference.

USC release:

I would certainly question the phrasing "in dominating fashion", but I imagine we would do the same thing if the shoe was on the other foot.

Oh, and highlights!

I forgot about that nice header from Redman on the cross by Smith (at 0:12). Redman also got a great head to a ball on a corner from Barg in the opening minute that was saved off the line by the player on the post. SMU definitely had some nice chances today.

TCU Thursday night at Westcott!
