W-Soccer: SMU at UConn

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Tue Sep 24, 2013 9:53 pm

The Mustangs start conference play in the American Thursday night at Connecticut (6pm Dallas time).

UConn (6-4-0) has had a decent non-conference season, with wins over Boston College and Syracuse and one-goal losses to Stanford and Georgetown.

SMU (5-3-0) has had a similar run through the non-conference schedule with close losses against some good teams like South Carolina, Arkansas, and Baylor.

The Mustangs will need to find the scoring touch in this one, as UConn has only given up 7 goals in their 10 games with 6 shutouts. The Huskies are led up top by freshman Rachel Hill who has 5 goals and 2 assists to date.

Hopefully, SMU will get off to a great start in conference play!

No need to worry about weather in this one - it looks like it should be just about perfect.

The current forecast is clear with 0% of precipitation, minimal wind, and a kickoff temperature of 61 falling into the upper 50s through the game.

As a UConn grad, this one is a hard one for me. I will however, be cheering loudly when I go to the game Sunday at Temple. Anyone else out there who might be going?

Courtney Smith saves one off the line after a UConn corner keeping things at 1-1. Wow.

UConn makes it 2-1 late in the first.

2-1 at the half. SMU had some really good chances but UConn certainly had the balance of play.

The stats are a little bit misleading, but shots are 17-5 to UConn, shots on goal are 6-1 to UConn, and corners are 5-2 to UConn.

Taylor Jackson picked up a good yellow along the way as well.

SMU with a flurry of chances including three corners in the span of about two minutes...

Still 2-1.

Two more dangerous corners for SMU but still 2-1.

Shots ended up 28-8 to UConn, shots on goal were 12-1 to UConn. Once again, not a true indication of the quality of chances.

Corners ended just 10-8 to UConn.

Also of note, Rikki Clarke picked up a late yellow for throwing a forearm. She now has three on the season. Five accumulated yellows is a one-game suspension.

Sunday at Temple!
