DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs earned their second league win of the season as they defeated Cincinnati 2-1 at Westcott Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs improves to 7-5-0 (2-2-0 American) while Cincinnati falls to 6-8-0 (2-2-0) in the 2013 season.

SMU applied a lot of pressure on the offensive end all game, but the second half was particularly strong for the offense as it outshot Cincinnati 13-4 in the period. Briana Gaines worked for a scoring chance in the 58th minute, taking a shot at goal that was touched by the arm of a Cincinnati defender, giving SMU a penalty kick opportunity. Shelby Redman took the kick and converted on the attempt that was aimed to the left side of the goal. The marker gave SMU a 2-1 lead that it wouldn't relinquish.

Jessica Bartol gave SMU a 1-0 lead at the 9:25 mark of the first half after she connected on a header at point-blank range off a cross from Courtney Smith. Taylor Barg also earned an assist on the goal.

Cincinnati tied the match at 1-1 just over three minutes into the second half after receiving a corner kick to SMU goalieLauryn Bodden's right side. The ball bounced off bodies from each team before Megan Cravenor connected on it from around the penalty dot and fired it home.

The match was quite physical, with two yellow cards being issued to each team.

Smith's assist gave her nine for the season and 26 for her career, tying her for sixth all-time at SMU with Olivia O'Rear. Redman's goal was the eighth of the season for the junior and the 19th of her career, tying her for 17th in SMU history with Kristi Anderson. Bartol's goal was her first since Sept. 5, 2010 against Davidson.

SMU's next match is slated for Thursday at Memphis at 7 p.m. CT.
