Mustangs Tied For Second After Day One At Erin Hills Intercollegiate
Higgs Tied For Tournament Lead At Four-Under Par
ERIN, Wisc. (SMU) - Harry Higgs and Bryson Dechambeau led the way as SMU finished tied for second after the first round at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Higgs finished at four-under par (68), tying him for the lead with Marquette's Zach Gaugert and Stanford's Patrick Rodgers, who is rated as the eighth-best player in the nation by GolfStat. Higgs recorded one birdie with no bogeys on the front nine, then bogeyed just one hole on his back nine versus four birdies. Dechambeau is just one stroke off their pace, carding a 69 with four birdies on the back nine after sitting at one-over par heading into the 10th hole.
As a team, SMU shot nine-under par over its last seven holes.
"It was a great finish for us today," Head Coach Josh Gregory said. "Very proud of the guys and hope we can carry momentum into tomorrow."
No. 11 Stanford leads at eight-under par, with No. 7 UCLA and SMU in second at two-under. Michigan, Oregon State and Northwestern are tied for fourth at one-over par.
The 14-team field will begin teeing off at 8:30 a.m. CT tomorrow.
