Acker and Young both finished with double-doubles

DALLAS (SMU) - Cailin Bula scored a career-high 17 kills, and Caroline Young finished with 16, but South Florida took the match in the fifth set, winning 3-2 (25-17, 14-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-10). Avery Acker recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 45 assists and 14 digs, and freshman Morgan Heise had a match-high 15 digs.
The Bulls (10-10, 4-2 American Athletic Conference) scored four straight kills in the fifth set during a six-point run to take a 12-5 lead. SMU (12-8, 4-3 American) scored a pair of aces to spark a 5-1 run, cutting the lead to three, 13-10. USF finished the match with a kill and a block, ending the Mustangs' rally.
Young finished with 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and second straight, and also had four aces. Abbey Bybel posted nine kills and nine digs. Freshman Janelle Giordano had eight kills and four blocks in the match. USF forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win in the fourth. The Mustangs scored five straight to take a 10-5 lead early in the set, but with SMU leading 15-9, the Bulls went on an 11-2 run to take a 20-17 lead. USF out-scored the Mustangs 5-4 down the stretch for the 25-21 win.
SMU recorded just five errors and scored 15 kills in the second set to tie the match 1-1 with a 25-14 win. Young scored five kills in the set, and Bula had four for the Mustangs to lead the offensive attack. SMU held the Bulls to just seven kills, holding USF to a .080 attack percentage while hitting .414. The Mustangs built a 14-3 lead to start the set, and the lead never dropped below eight points the rest of the way.
The Mustangs were even more efficient in the third set than the second, hitting .469 with 18 kills for a 25-15 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Bula had eight kills in the set, hitting .800 with 10 attacks. Acker had 15 assists and seven digs in the third set alone. With the score tied 3-3, SMU went on a 9-2 run to take a 12-5 lead, with Young scoring three aces during the stretch. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 10, 18-8, and matched the Bulls down the stretch for the second double-digit win of the match.

SMU takes on UCF Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Dedman Center for its Dig Pink match. The Mustangs will have a silent auction with memorabilia from the volleyball program, as well as autographed items from June Jones and Larry Brown. Donations will also be accepted at the door, and all proceeds go directly to breast cancer research through the Side-Out Foundation.
