DALLAS (SMU) - Abbey Bybel scored 15 kills and Caroline Young finished with 12 to lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-18, 25-11) at home against Rutgers Friday night in the Dedman Center. Bybel also had nine digs to lead the Mustangs' defensively, holding Rutgers to just 21 kills in the match. With the win, SMU improved to 7-3 in the American Athletic Conference and 15-8 overall, while the Scarlet Knights fell to 4-20, 0-10 in the American.
Bybel was just two kills away from matching her career high of 17, which she recorded in a five-set match earlier this season, hitting .429 with just three errors in 28 attacks. Young reached double figures for the 17th time this season and eighth time in conference play.
The Mustangs finished the match with a 25-11 win in the third set. With the score tied 4-4, SMU went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-6 lead, and all but erase any chance the Scarlet Knights had of extending the match. Rutgers scored its final point of the match to make the score 21-11 before SMU ended it with a kill by Young, an ace by Maddie Lozano, and kills by Carla Armstrong and Janelle Giordano.
Bybel scored eight kills in the first set to lead the Mustangs to a 25-22 win and the 1-0 advantage in the set. SMU scored the first three points of the set, getting two on a pair of aces by Heise, but a 6-2 run by the Scarlet Knights put Rutgers in front 6-5. Rutgers extended its lead to three, 14-11, but SMU rallied to take the lead back, 18-17, scoring three straight. Rutgers kept the back-and-forth action going with a 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead, but the Mustangs held the Scarlet Knights scoreless with another 3-0 run on kills from Young, Bybel and Lozano to end the set.
In the second set, Rutgers took a 3-0 lead, but SMU answered with a 12-2 run to take control. The Scarlet Knights cut the lead to three, 15-12. By the time the Mustangs got to 20, Rutgers was still just three points behind, but SMU used a 5-1 run to take the set 25-18, scoring the final point on a block by Giordano and Cailin Bula.
The Mustangs hosts Connecticut Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Dedman Center, concluding a five-match homestand.
