Arcila Sets Pool Record As Mustangs Fall At Rice
Junior Isabella Set The Pool Record In The 100-Yard Backstroke

HOUSTON (SMU) - Junior Isabella Arcila set the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke as SMU fell, 151-129, at the Rice Aquatics Center Natatorium on Friday evening.

The Cali, Columbia, native finished the event in a time of 56.41, which bested former Mustang Therese Svendsen, for the victory. Arcila also picked up the win in the 200-yard back narrowly out reaching her Owl opponent in 2:01.37, and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly at 57.88.

Senior Nina Rangelova and junior Rachel Nicol also turned in impressive performances for SMU, as the pair combined for five top finishes on the night. Rangelvoa swept the 50-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Nicol picked up wins in the 100- and 200-yard breastroke.

Other top performers for the Ponies included senior Alice McCall, junior Nathalie Lindborg and freshman Ursa Bezan. McCall finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:21.95) and third in the 500-yard free (5:10.64), Lindborg was second in the 50-yard free (24.28) and third in the 100-yard free (52.32) and Bezan placed third in both the 200-yard free (1:54.11) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:31.64).

In the relays, SMU outswam four teams for first place in the 200-yard medley. Arcila, Nicol, Bezan and junior Nicole Parmenter clocked in at 1:45.81. To close out the evening, Rangelova, Parmenter, Lindborg and senior Monika Babok finished as the runner-ups in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:29.90).

Freshman Margaret Lindsay also competed in her first collegiate competition, representing the Mustangs in one- and three-meter diving.

SMU is back in action on Saturday as it heads across town for a dual meet with Houston. The meet is schedule for a 12:00 p.m. CT start, and live stats can be found at SMUMustangs.com.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) - Junior Isabella Arcila was named the American Athletic Conference Female Swimmer of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday. It is the first time a Mustang swimmer has earned the honor in the new conference.

"I am very proud of Isa's performance this week," Head Coach Steve Collins said. "She stepped up for the team in both the Rice and Houston meets."

So excited for her. She showed her class at the SMU Classic a couple of weeks ago, thrilled to see she is getting some recognition.

Isabella is coming on strong, especially in my favorite event, backstroke. :D

BTW, the coolest swimmers swim this stroke. :wink:
