SMU Tied For First After Round One At Querencia Cabo Collegiate
Smotherman, Higgs in Top Five After Windy Day

March 2, 2014

LOS CABOS, Mexico (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs had three players score in the top 15 and battled windy conditions to wind up tied for the lead after the first round at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Sunday. SMU is tied with Houston at four-over par, with No. 1 Alabama six strokes off the lead.

Austin Smotherman paced SMU with a one-under 70, tying him for second overall. The sophomore totaled five birdies, including three between holes 9 and 13. Harry Higgs was also one of just eight golfers that shot rounds of par or better at Los Querencia on Sunday, carding a 71 after two late-round birdies on holes 16 and 17. Andrew Buchanan also benefitted from late birdies, jumping into a tie for 15th after tallying birdies on 15 and 18.

Ryan Burgess sits in a tie for 21st at three-over par, while Bryson Dechambeau carded a five-over par 76 including an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. Alex Higgs, competing as an individual, tallied a two-over 73 to begin his second-career tournament. Maxime Blandin is also competing at the event as an individual, recording an opening-round 84.

Vanderbilt spent a portion of the day in the lead but dropped back to fourth at 12-over, tied with both Baylor and UT Arlington. LSU, Kentucky, Arkansas and Coastal Carolina rounded out the top 10. Houston’s Roman Robledo holds a two-stroke lead on the field after carding the only round in the 60s on Sunday, posting a three-under 68. Vanderbilt’s Charlie Ewing and Smotherman are tied for second, while Harry Higgs is tied with four others for fourth.
Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Teams will again play in foursomes with SMU, Houston, Alabama and Vanderbilt grouped together.
