SMU Defeats Penn State, 5-2 In Tampa
SMU Is Back In Action Tomorrow Against No. 51 USF

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team tallied its fourth straight win as the Mustangs defeated Penn State, 5-2 in a neutral site match in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday. Anna Kate Anderson led SMU as the freshman improved her overall record to 11-10 and won her fifth match in a row after she beat Penn State freshman Taylor Shukow in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles match. The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow against No. 51 USF at 11 a.m. CT in Tampa.
SMU (5-8) took the opening doubles point and then won at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles positions to secure the match victory over Penn State (4-9).
In addition to Anderson in singles, sophomore Yana Erkeeva (14-7) won at the No. 4 singles position as she beat Nittany Lion senior Marie Bedard in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 while freshmen Dasha Sharapova (13-8) and Macie Elliott (11-12) won at the No. 3 and 5 singles positions in three sets.
In doubles, sophomore Hristina Dishkova and junior Holly Verner improved their overall record to an outstanding 9-1 following their 8-2 win at the No. 2 position over Penn State freshman Katia Blik and Shukow. Securing the doubles point for SMU was sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and freshman Dasha Sharapova (9-3) as the Mustang duo won their third straight match after they defeated freshman Dasha Sapogova and Bedard, 8-6.
Following tomorrow’s match, SMU is back in action on Thursday when the team travels to Orlando to take on American Athletic Conference foe UCF at 2 p.m. CT.
