Kalu Finishes Sixth In 60-Meter Dash Semifinal At NCAA Indoor Championships
SMU Competes On Day One Of NCAA Indoor Championship
March 14, 2014
Albuquerque, N.M (SMU) – SMU sprinter Stephanie Kalu competed in the 60-meter dash semifinal at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday as the junior placed sixth in the second heat with a time of 7.37 seconds. Despite her strong effort, Kalu did not advance to the finals tomorrow.
“Stephanie gained a lot of valuable experience today which is needed to compete at this level,†Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. “It’s always a shame when an individual doesn’t accomplish the goals he or she sets out for, and that happened today. However, Stephanie picked up a lot a valuable experience which will help her immensely in the future.â€
Kalu qualified for the Championships in the prelims of the American Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 7.28 seconds. At The American Championships, she earned SMU’s second individual title when she placed first in the 60-meter dash finals in 7.31 seconds.
This winter, Kalu also earned two AAC Athlete-of-the-Week awards in consecutive weeks with the second coming on Feb. 4. She earned the honors following her outstanding performances at the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational and the Masked Rider Invitational.
Kalu and the Mustangs now begin their outdoor season this week as the team travels to Fort Worth, Texas for the TCU Horned Frog Invitational on March 21.
“What we have done so far is great with winning conference titles in both cross country and indoor,†Wollman said. “All our efforts are now focused on winning triple crown at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships this spring.â€
