DALLAS (SMU) -The SMU rowing team swept Creighton and Canisius at the SMU Invite held at White Rock Lake on Friday and Saturday. The sweep marked the first two events of the spring season for the Mustangs.
"I thought they did great," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "Overall it was a great weekend, and the kids feel great about themselves so hopefully they'll use that confidence going into the next week or two."
The Ponies kicked off the invite on Friday evening when they hosted Creighton and swept Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 events. The first Varsity 8 crew of Savannah Moody, Lindsay Heyman, Allison Buchanan, Mackenzie Daly, Loni Albrecht, Chantelle Conley, Sydney Severson, Lauren Moore and Molly O'Connell clocked in at 7:02.40 to edge out CU at 7:07.
The second Varsity 8 crew finished in a time of 7:10.38, while the third Varsity 8 finished in 7:42.65. SMU's Varsity 4 crew of Nikole Metz, Hanna Axene, Meghan Klein, Brittany Courteau and Amanda Esposito earned the victory in 8:03.37.
On Saturday, SMU completed the sweep with three victories over Canisius. The first Varsity 8 group from Friday evening returned with a 7:02.12 finish, and the second Varsity 8 crew clocked in at 7:10.73. In the final event of the weekend, both the Mustangs' Varsity 4 crew and Novice 4 crew crossed ahead of CC with times of 7:51.35 and 8:18.10, respectively.
"It was great to be out there on the water, everyone is so supportive of each other," freshman Nicki Fletcher said. "We've been working really hard for our first race as novice and everyone did really well. We held a pretty consistent stroke rate and we just wanted to do really well for us."
SMU is back in action on March 29 when it travels to Kansas City, Kan., to face Kansas, Kansas State and Drake.
"It's early in the season and we still have a lot of work to do, but we race in two weeks and we're going to get ready for Kansas, Kansas State and Drake so we need to keep preparing for that," Wright added.
