April 9, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) - The SMU rowing team picked up its first American Athletic Conference weekly honor of the season as the crew in the Novice 8+ race was named Boat of the Week for its performance on Saturday against Alabama and Eastern Michigan.

"I'm really proud of them and the way they take pride in the program," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "They've been really instrumental in establishing a culture for our program from the day they stepped foot on campus."

The crew of Molly O'Connell, Savannah Moody, Lindsay Heyman, Sydney Severson, Mackenzie Daly, Dominique Earland, Amanda Esposito, Brittany Courteau and Meghan Klein finished its race in a time of 7:47.0 for the victory. Alabama, who was second in the event, clocked in over 11 seconds behind the Ponies at 7:58.5, and Eastern Michigan finished in third at 9:00.8.

"This group is here to help solidify the mindset that we're contenders and competitors," Wright added. "They're here to take us to the next level and they're really living out the values we try to inspire."

The Mustangs are back in action this weekend when they travel to Cherry Hill, N.J., for the Knecht Cup. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow.
