Haglund First, SMU Third, Through Two Rounds At American Championship
Sophomore Jenny Haglund takes three-stroke lead into final round, Mustangs sit nine strokes off pace

PALM COAST, Fla. (SMU) –Sophomore Jenny Haglund shot a one-under 71, and is leading the 38-player field after the second of three rounds at The American Athletic Conference Championship on Monday at the Hammock Beach Ocean Course. As a team, SMU dropped nine strokes off its first round total, shooting an 18-over 306 in Monday’s second round, and is in third place heading into the final 18 holes.
SMU sits nine strokes behind the leader, No. 18 UCF, and five strokes behind No. 38 Louisville for second. The Mustangs have a four-stroke advantage over Memphis for third on the team leaderboard.
“We played right with the top teams out there today,†head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “We counted a couple big holes, but we stayed in the hunt, and put ourselves in a position to compete tomorrow. Jenny played very solid golf, hit the ball very well, picked good targets and fought to par some holes when she needed to. Alex (Rossi) also played very smart golf on the course today, hit a lot of greens and was mentally focused throughout the entire round.â€
Haglund’s 71 ties the best round of the tournament thus far, is her 10th round at par or better this season and is the 16th of her career. The Karlstad, Sweden, native carded three birdies and two bogeys, including consecutive birdies on 13 and 14.
Sophomore Alexandra Rossi shot a three-over 75 in the second round, and will enter tomorrow’s final round in a tie for 11th at 11-over. Rossi’s 75 is her best score in a round since February’s Central District Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. The Austin, Texas, native holed back-to-back birdies on 7 and 8 to highlight her round.
Senior Maria Elena Villamil birdied the 18th hole to finish her second round at seven-over. Villamil will enter the final conference tournament round of her career in a tie for 16th.
Tuesday’s final round will tee off at 7 a.m. CT, and can be followed live on Golfstat.com. SMU will be paired with the leaders, UCF and Louisville, tomorrow morning.
