Men's Tennis In Second After First Round Of American Athletic Conference Championships
Dechambeau, Smotherman Each Tied For Second Individually

April 27, 2014

INNISBROOK, Fla. (SMU) - Sophomores Austin Smotherman and Bryson Dechambeau each carded one-under par rounds to lead the SMU Mustangs to second place on the leaderboard after the first round at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Innisbrook, Fla., on Sunday.

SMU ended Sunday's round just four strokes out of the lead, currently held by No. 7 UCF. USF is three strokes behind the Mustangs in third, while No. 9 Houston and Cincinnati round out the top five.

Smotherman spent a large portion of his day in the top 10, finishing the front nine at even par with a birdie on the par-four ninth hole, and shooting a one-under par back nine with birdies on both back-nine par fives. Dechambeau bogeyed two holes early in his round, but recorded four birdies between holes eight and 15 (including consecutive birdies on 11 and 12) to move into a tie for second overall.

Sophomore Ryan Burgess began the day at two-under par through five holes, but bogeyed five holes the rest of the way to drop back to 18th overall. Senior Harry Higgs bogeyed three holes on the front nine, but a birdie on the par-three 13th moved him to two-over par, good for 13th on the leaderboard.

UCF's Linus Vaisanen ended the day with a three-stroke lead at minus-four, carding the day's only round in the 60s.

The tournament boasts five players ranked in GolfStat's top 50. and two semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award for most outstanding amateur collegiate golfer - SMU's Dechambeau and Greg Eason (UCF).

The second round will begin tomorrow at 7 a.m. CT, with SMU grouped in twosomes with UCF.

SMU (+2) six strokes behind University Central Florida (-4) early today.

Dechambeau (-2) still three back and tied for second.

Around half way today..

SMU (+7) still in second to UCF (+2) by 5 strokes.

Austin Smotherman up to T2 with a -1 so far today (-1 overall).

Dechambeau slips to 5th (E).

After the second round, SMU is still in second place but only by one stroke! It's going to be an exciting third round with the top five teams all in striking distance.

1. UCF (+4)
2. SMU (+5)
3. Houston (+10)
4. USF (+11)
5. Louisville (+12)

Bryson Dechambeau also had three birdies on the back nine to finish the day -3 and take the individual lead with an overall score of -4!

University Central Florida has picked up a stroke early and South Florida is off to a hot start.

Dechambeau is -1 today through three and has extended his lead to two shots (-5 overall).

Smotherman is in a tie for third at -1 overall.

SMU is also tied for first in the team competition which is really tightening up:

SMU is currently leading the overall competition (which remains tight - at one point the top three schools were all +7):

Dechambeau still leads the individual competition by two strokes at -5 overall through six holes today.

Bryson Dechambeau continues to lead the individual competition at -6 through nine holes. Smotherman is alone in second as well at -2 through nine.

Dechambeau is also has a four stroke lead at -5 through 12. Three players are tied at -1. Smotherman has slipped to T5 at E.

SMU and University Central Florida are the only two teams remaining on the course. The Mustangs are the only team under par today (-1).

At -7 overall, Dechambeau has a five shot lead through 15.

Smotherman is still E and tied for fourth overall.
