COMPLETE 2014 SCHEDULE
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer program, led by Head Coach Tim McClements, has released its 2014 schedule. Three 2013 postseason teams, as well as ten home matches highlight the schedule.
The 2014 slate begins with a two-match road trip in Michigan, where the Ponies will face a 2013 Elite Eight squad in Michigan State (Aug. 29), before heading to Ann Arbor to face Michigan (Aug. 31). This is the first meeting for the Mustangs with both Big Ten programs.
SMU’s home opener follows when Duke comes to town on Sept. 5, and the annual SMU Invitational is set for Sept. 12 and 14 when the Mustangs face Missouri State and Stony Brook. SMU is 13-3-1 all-time against MSU, while the Stony Brook match-up is the first in the program’s history. American Athletic Conference participant Memphis fills the fourth spot at the invitational.
The final match before conference play begins features the Mustangs and Oral Roberts (Sept. 19), a team SMU has a 5-0 all-time advantage over.
The Mustangs kickoff their second season as a member of the American Athletic Conference with a match against new league member Tulsa on Sept. 26 at Westcott Field. A familiar foe to SMU, as the two were former members of Conference USA, the programs have met 37 times with the Ponies leading the series at 27-7-3. The Golden Hurricane fell in the C-USA championship a season ago and finished 2013 at 11-6-3. The teams will meet for a second time in 2014 on Oct. 22 for a non-conference match.
SMU steps out of conference action on Oct. 1 to host Northern Illinois before visiting UCF (Oct. 4), hosting Memphis (Oct. 8 ) and traveling to Temple (Oct. 11). The Mustangs are a combined 11-6-4 against the three American opponents all time.
On Oct. 15, Missouri Valley Conference member Central Arkansas comes to the Hilltop for its third meeting with the Mustangs. SMU leads the all-time series 2-0.
2013 American tournament champion and NCAA tournament participant USF comes to town on Oct. 18, and the Mustangs begin their final road swing with their second match against Tulsa (Oct. 22) and a meeting with conference foe Connecticut (Oct. 25), who advanced to last season’s NCAA Elite Eight.
The final match of the regular season pairs the Mustangs up with AAC-member Cincinnati (Nov. 1), a team SMU defeated 3-1 last season.
