Dechambeau Named Second-Team All-America
Sophomore Won Conference Championship, Placed Ninth At NCAA Championships

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU sophomore Bryson Dechambeau was named a PING Second Team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America, the group announced Thursday. Dechambeau is SMU’s first second team honoree since Hank Kuehne in 1998.

Dechambeau, who is ranked ninth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and eighth in the GolfStat collegiate ranking, won the inaugural American Athletic Conference individual championship and placed in the top 10 in both the NCAA San Antonio Regional and the NCAA Championships. Dechambeau played a large role in leading SMU to its first team conference title since 2006 and a spot in the match play quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships.

“Bryson had an incredible year and is very deserving of this honor,” SMU head coach Josh Gregory said. “He had probably the most consistent year that I have coached in my 14 years as a head coach. He was a big reason why we made it to the elite eight.”

Dechambeau rattled off seven top-five and nine top-10 finishes in 13 tournaments this season. The Clovis, Calif., native also played his strongest to finish tournaments, as he posted the fifth best final round scoring average in the nation (69.77). In all, Dechambeau totaled 23 rounds at par or better, including a season-low 64 in the final round of the Gifford Collegiate at Pelican Hill in November.

In April, Dechambeau was selected to the United States Palmer Cup team and named a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, given to the national player of the year. Gregory believes that his sophomore will continue to get better and earn more praise as his collegiate career continues.

“He has very high goals and wants to be the best player in the nation,” Gregory stated. “By him making the Palmer Cup team he has a great chance to make the Walker Cup next year. I expect him to be one of the best, if not the best player in college golf over the next two years. I am extremely proud of him and this is a great honor for him and SMU golf.”

SMU advanced to its first NCAA Championship since 2005, and earned its top national finish since winning the national title in 1954.

Hope he qualifies for the US AM, can def make a run if he gets in.

Bryson goes 2-2 in the Palmer Cup...USA was on the losing team side unfortunately.
