Dechambeau Advances To Quarterfinals At The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship
SMU Junior-To-Be Three Wins Away From Likely Masters Invitation
July 17, 2014
NEWTON, Kan. (SMU) - SMU golfer Bryson Dechambeau advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur Public Links hosted by the Sand Creek Station Golf Course on Thursday. Dechambeau, who will be a junior in 2014-15 for the Mustangs, will face Byron Meth of Pacific tomorrow at 7:45 a.m.
Dechambeau beat Tyler McDaniel, 1-up, in the round of 16. The two players traded scores for much of the first 12 holes, but Dechambeau took control with consecutive wins on holes 13 and 14 to gain a lead he would not relinquish.
On Thursday morning, Dechambeau topped Sam Horsfield of England, 3 & 2, in the round of 32. Horsfield led 2-up through six holes and had a one-hole advantage at hole eight, but Dechambeau again proved too strong on the back nine, winning four holes from 11-16 to seal the victory. Dechambeau also beat Chase Johnson on Wednesday in the first round of match play, 5 & 4.
Teammate Austin Smotherman also advanced to match play in the event after finishing the two rounds of stroke play tied for 10th at two-under par. Smotherman reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links last season.
The winner of the prestigious tournament receives exemptions from qualifying for the next two U.S. Amateurs, exemptions from local qualifying for the next three U.S. Opens (if still an amateur) and a likely invitation to the next Masters Tournament.
Former Mustang and current professional golfer Colt Knost won the U.S. Amateur Public Links title in 2007.
