GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (SMU) – SMU golfer Austin Smotherman qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships with a win at the U.S. Amateur Qualifying Event at Tangle Ridge Golf Course on Monday. Smotherman finished at 11-under par over the two-round event.
Smotherman becomes the third Mustang to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Amateur, joining Bryson Dechambeau and incoming freshman Ben Baxter.
The Loomis, California, native started strong in round one, carding five straight birdies from holes 3-7. He would shoot a seven-under 65 in round one and a 68 in round two with just one bogey.
The 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 11-17 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia. SMU has had three players win the event in the last 16 years – Hank Kuehne (1998), Colt Knost (2007) and Kelly Kraft (2011).
