W-Soccer: SMU at Nebraska

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Thu Aug 21, 2014 7:16 pm

The Mustangs start the 2014 with a big challenge against Nebraska in Lincoln Friday night at 6pm.

The Cornhuskers are ranked No. 13 in the NSCAA preseason poll. Nebraska defeated Colorado College 5-3 in their exhibition, while SMU had a 2-2 draw against Oklahoma State.

You never know what is going to happen in a new season. SMU added a lot and Nebraska lost a lot.

Go Mustangs!

SMU down 3-0 at the half. Nebraska had three good opportunities and buried them all.

4-0 Final. SMU much better in the second half, but the defensive breakdowns in the first half dug too deep of a hole.

Still a lot of lineup experimentation, but definitely signs of good things to come.

Kansas Sunday. Go Mustangs!

Didn't think we were that far behind Nebraska. Tough game so early in the year.

Yeah - tough scheduling to open on the road against a ranked team with such a young SMU team. Seven starters were sophomores or freshmen (four of five subs as well).

Tough to sugarcoat a 4-0, but SMU was much better in the second half.

CP's record against teams rank in the top 30 hasn't been stellar in recent years. Going back to his UT days, in 2009 CP was 0-4-0, in 2010 CP was 1-1-2, in 2011 CP was 0-4-1. That's a total of 1 win versus teams ranked in the top 30 and 9 losses and 1 tie. He does have 1 win versus a top 30 team since coming to SMU, that would be in his first year when the team went 1-4-0 beating UCF. However, the prior year coached by Brent Erwin, SMU had gone 1-1-1 versus teams in the top 30. SMU tied Memphis who was undefeated at the time and finished the season 22-1-1. SMU beat UCF 1-0, UCF went on that year to defeat North Carolina in the NCAA tournament.

Maybe it's not the youth of the players, but the age of the coach.

Record seems similar to Junes record against ranked teams...........

So heading into this weekend, the team has had to scratch a final seconds goal to salvage a tie in the scrimmage against Oklahoma State, and then has been outscored 7-0 in its two opening matches. Granted it has not helped that both keepers are now out, but even with a garage door across the net, there would still be no wins.

How this is supposedly turning the program around is confusing.

Not sure about the June comparison....in 2009 first bowl bid in 25 years and it was a win against Nevada, 2010 bowl bid and loss to Army, 2011 bowl bid and beat Pittsburgh, 2012 bowl bid and a win vs. Fresno State. For CP during the same time at UT 2009 no bid to NCAA, 2010 a bid and first round loss 1-3, 2011 a bid and again first round loss 0-1. In fact since 2007 CP had only one win in the NCAA tournament. The year before CP's arrival SMU lost to #10 ranked UCLA 0-1 when UCLA had Sidney Leroux, beat #20 UCF 1-0 and tied # 8 Memphis 3-3. In CP'S first year SMU lost to #3 San Diego State 0-1 in OT, lost #8 Virginia 1-2, lost to # 10 Baylor 1-2 in 2ot, beat #20 UCF 2-1, then lost 0-2 to #20 UCF.

All of the above games except one was a one goal game differential.

Now start 2014 0-4 and 0-3?

Doppler Effect is the change in sound frequency when an object moves past another object.

What would you call it when a sport moves on past a coach?

Was referring to JJ's record against ranked teams, P5 Teams, teams with winning records, etc etc...................

I understand what you are says about JJ, but they have gotten bowl bids for 4 out of the past 5 years. And, maybe this year they have a chance to beat a ranked team, lot's of chances, they have a really tough schedule.

My point was, CP took over a team that was competitive and even beating some top teams. Inherited an excellent recruiting class last year, brought in 9 of his own recruits this year and now SMU isn't competitive against a ranked team.
