Mustangs Return To Dallas For Home Opener On Friday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (SMU) – The SMU women’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday at Jayhawk Soccer Complex in Lawrence, Kan. Despite the three-goal margin, the game was a hard-fought battle.

“I thought the game was pretty even in the first half,” said SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli. “We had our chances.”

On a sweltering 100-degree day, the Mustangs and the Jayhawks went back and forth for the first 30 minutes match.

Kansas (2-0-0) then went ahead, 1-0, when Eli Mayr tallied a goal in the 31st minute. The Jayhawks carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

SMU (0-2-0) had a few scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.

In the 27th minute, a free kick from sophomore defender Taylor Barg narrowly missed the frame. In the 41st minute, freshman forward Lauren Guerra’s corner kick found the foot of sophomore midfielder Paige Jacobs, but Jacobs’ shot went wide left.

In the second half, the Mustangs continued to put pressure on the Kansas defense. SMU fired five shots and earned seven corner kicks in the half, but were unable to capitalize on any of these chances.

The Mustangs were dealt a crucial blow in the 58th minute when starting goalkeeper Shannon Moroney left with an injury. With the only other keeper on the roster, Lauryn Bodden, also sidelined with an injury, junior midfielder Lissi Lonsberry went in net for the remainder of the game.

“Being without your goalkeeper obviously affects the game,” said Petrucelli. “But the team certainly fought hard.”

With Lonsberry in net, the Jayhawks added to their lead, thanks to a goal from Ali Kimura in the 71st minute.

The best chance for the Mustangs came in the 84th minute, when they were able to earn a penalty kick. Senior defender Olivia Elliott took the kick for the Mustangs, but her attempt was saved by Kansas goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud.

Liana Salazaar extended the Kansas lead to three with a goal in the 90th minute.

In her first career appearance in net, Lonsberry recorded two saves. Senior forward Shelby Redman led the Mustangs in shots with three, while sophomore midfielder Kelsey Gorney registered two shots on goal. Olivia Elliott, Taylor Jackson and Claire Oates all played the full 90 minutes for SMU.

The Ponies will look to right the ship when they return home for two matches next weekend. On Friday, Aug. 29, the Mustangs take on Texas Southern at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. SMU will then host Missouri on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CT.

Briana Gaines was a high school basketball player and is a really good athlete. Could the team bring her back to try to play keeper?

I think you can add a player already enrolled in school, but don't know for sure. I imagine the NCAA Clearinghouse would have to be involved to some degree because of scholarship issues.

SMU did add a keeper to the roster today. Katie Anne Head, a sophomore from Bloomington, Indiana.

I guess we will know in a couple of hours if she is playing tonight.
