SMU Comes From Behind To Top UTSA, 2-1
Jacobs, Oates Tally Goals For The Mustangs

Sept. 7, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team earned its second win of the season on Sunday night, defeating UTSA, 2-1, at Westcott Field. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Mustangs received second half goals from sophomore Paige Jacobs and freshman Claire Oates to earn the comeback victory.

Senior defender Olivia Elliott, who missed Friday's match against Oral Roberts, returned to action and helped keep the UTSA attack scoreless for the final 83 minutes of the game.

"We're just more solid with her," said Head Coach Chris Petrucelli. "She makes a difference on that back line, so we were better defensively."

UTSA (3-2-0, 0-0-0 C-USA) opened up the scoring in the 7th minute, when forward Jenny Trommer capitalized off of a through ball from Anissa Munson, but the Roadrunners could not muster any more offense for the rest of the game.

SMU (2-4-0, 0-0-0 AAC) had a few chances late in the first half to even the score, but could not capitalize. In the 29th minute, sophomore defender Taylor Jackson sent in a dangerous ball, but UTSA keeper Katherine Tesno came out to snag the cross before it could reach an SMU player.

In the 36th minute, sophomore midfielder Kelsey Gorney hit a cross to senior forward Shelby Redman, but Redman's attempt went right of the target.

Freshman midfielder Claire Oates had the best chance of the half for the Mustangs in the 39th minute, when her header on a Taylor Barg corner kick skimmed off the crossbar.

The Mustangs came out firing in the second half, tallying two quick goals and outshooting the Roadrunners, 6-2, in the half.

SMU evened the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute, when Jacobs found the back of the net for her first career goal as a Mustang. Barg lofted a corner kick into the box where Oates headed it to Jacobs, who sent the ball over the hands of UTSA keeper Emma Makela.

Just two minutes later, the Mustangs went ahead, 2-1. Redman sent a long cross towards the back post and Oates was there to head it past Makela for the game-winning goal.

"It was an excellent service," Petrucelli said about the goal. "We got numbers in the box, which has been a problem for us this year. That goal was a good one for us."

The Mustangs outshot the Roadrunners, 10-5, and also had six corner kicks in the game.

Junior goalkeeper Lissi Lonsberry tallied two saves for SMU.

After four consecutive home matches, the Mustangs will hit the road for a non-conference match at Colorado State on Friday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. CT.

To be included in the rankings requires a coach to be at current school for three years.
