No. 24 SMU Places Second At Ken Garland Invitational
Four Mustangs Place In Top Ten

DENTON, Texas (SMU) – The 24th-ranked SMU women’s cross country team finished second at the Ken Garland Invitational, hosted by the University of North Texas, on Saturday at the Eagle Pointe Cross Country Course.
Rice won the 5K race with an average time of 18:06. The Mustangs finished just 17 seconds behind the Owls with an average time of 18:23.
Sophomore Agnes Sjöström paced the Mustangs, finishing sixth with a time of 18:00.5.
Juniors Holly Archer, Karoline Skatteboe and Shanoah Souza also placed in the top ten. Archer crossed the finish line eighth (18:10.
, Skatteboe finished ninth (18:14.1) and Souza rounded out the top ten (18:19.4).
Claire Trotter, a junior, and Julie Vanderhout, a sophomore, also finished in the top half of the field of 65 runners. Trotter cracked the top 25 with a time of 19:10.7 and Vanderhout finished 32nd (19:25.4).
Also competing for SMU were sophomores Margaret Brennan and Lauren Zabaleta and seniorJanell Steigerwald. Brennan finished 38th (19:42.3), Zabaleta crossed the finish line 51st (20:22.1) and Steigerwald placed 61st (22:28.6).
With next weekend off, the Mustangs will make their first trip out of the state of Texas this season, as they head to South Bend, Indiana, for the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 3.
