Mustangs Receiving Votes In NSCAA Division I Coaches Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (NSCAA) – The SMU men’s soccer team is receiving votes in the latest edition of the NSCAA Division I Rankings, the organization announced on Tuesday, following a 1-0-1 week.
The Mustangs, who are 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in American Athletic Conference action, posted a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois and a 1-1 draw with UCF. With the win against NIU, SMU is now 5-1 at home. The Mustangs are also sporting the longest unbeaten streak in The American at 4-0-1, and have wins over Duke and Tulsa, who were then receiving votes in the poll.
SMU is also ranked second in the East Region behind No. 16 USF, who is 6-3-0 overall and on the Mustangs’ schedule for Oct. 18 in Dallas.
In the Oct. 1 shutout of Northern Illinois, junior Idrissa Camara and redshirt-freshman Abdul Yassine tallied their third and first goals of the season, respectively, while goalkeeper Michael Nelson was only forced to make a pair of saves. In the weekend match, junior John Lujano converted on his second penalty kick of the season to secure the 1-1 draw in Orlando.
For his efforts during the week, Nelson was named to the American weekly honor roll for the second time this season.
