Mustangs Sweep The American Weekly Awards For Third Time This Season
Acker earns second offensive award; Giordano named Defensive Player of the Week

Nov. 24, 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) - Avery Acker and Janelle Giordano swept the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, and Morgan Heise was named to the weekly honor roll, after leading SMU into a second-place tie in the league standings with a pair of wins against Connecticut and Temple.

Acker earned her second Offensive Player of the Week award with 106 assists in two wins, including 61 against Temple, one shy of her career high. She also had 34 digs, including 20 in four sets against Connecticut, for double-doubles in both matches to take her league-leading season total to 25. The Poth, Texas, native leads The American with 1,329 assists this season, fourth all-time in a season at SMU.

Giordano was named Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career after tying the American Athletic Conference record with 13.0 blocks in four sets against Connecticut. She added six more against Temple for 19.0, averaging 2.38 per set for the weekend. A middle blocker from Keller, Texas, Giordano scored 16 kills, including 11 against Temple, hitting .310 for the two matches. She leads The American with 153.0 blocks this season, averaging 1.33 per set.

Heise, a three-time Defensive Player of the Week award winner, was named to the league's honor roll after recording 52 digs, averaging 6.5 per set on the weekend. The sophomore is averaging 5.51 digs per set in conference matches, tied for the league lead, and has 593 on the season, needing just 33 to break the SMU single-season record, which is currently 625 set by Sidney Stewart in 2011.

The Mustangs are 24-6 overall, 13-5 in The American, and host Tulsa Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the final home match. SMU concludes the regular season Friday at East Carolina. SMU has swept the conference weekly awards three times this season, with Mustangs earning eight individual Player of the Week awards overall.
