SMU Moves To Fourth After Two Rounds At Clover Cup
Haglund Tied For Seventh Individually

March 14, 2015

MESA, Ariz. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs moved up two spots on the leaderboard to fourth place after the second round at the Clover Cup on Saturday at the Longbow Golf Club. SMU improved by six strokes over its performance yesterday, posting a team score of 302.

Junior Alexandra Rossi carded SMU's top score of the day, shooting a 1-over 73. Rossi totaled four birdies on the day, including three over a four-hole stretch between holes 8-11. Overall, Rossi shot 2-under par from hole 8 through the end of her round.

Fellow junior Jenny Haglund began the day in fourth place individually, but posted five bogeys in round 2 to drop to a tie for seventh overall at 3-over par. Senior Jennifer Park tallied the Mustangs' second-best round on Saturday, shooting a 3-over 75 after opening her day with a birdie on the first hole. Sophomore Lindsey McCurdy ended her day with a birdie to give SMU its fourth counting score with a 6-over 78. Sophomore Evelyn Dole was one shot back of McCurdy's pace, posting a 7-over 79.

"I'm proud of all five of our players today," SMU head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "Rossi really played great. She played with a lot of heart and really hunkered down and made shots. It was great to get great play from all five players today."

SMU had a stronger round as a team on Saturday compared to the first round on Friday, which Sutherland said was due to better focus and mental toughness.

"We just did a better job of not getting rattled when things weren't going our way," Sutherland stated.

SMU is one stroke ahead of two teams tied for fifth - TCU and Florida International. Arizona State leads the tournament, followed by host Notre Dame and Oklahoma. The Mustangs are aiming for their third top-five finish of the season after placing fourth at the Betsy Rawls Invitational in October and fifth in their last event, the UC Irvine Invitational, at the end of February.

The Mustangs will tee off for round 3 via a shotgun start tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT/8 a.m. PT on holes 4-7, grouped with TCU and Florida International.
