Mustangs Defeat Kansas In Varsity 8+ Action
SMU Gets Second 1V Win At Home In 2015

April 4, 2015

COMPLETE RESULTS

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU rowing team hosted a three-team event on White Rock Lake Saturday morning, coming away with the win in 1st Varsity 8+ action over the crew from Kansas. This is the second victory for the Mustangs in as many races at home after defeating crews from Creighton and Central Oklahoma on March 14.

"I'm so happy and proud of our team for bouncing back from the Crew Classic," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "This is what we talk about in the meeting as soon as that race was over with. We know who we are, we know where we're going and we know what we're capable of and today we showed that. I saw an incredible difference of speed with the 1v and 2v."

The Mustang crew finished in 7:37.5, outpacing Kansas, which clocked a 7:44.4 in the race.

Crews from Kansas and Texas took the top spots in 2nd Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+, respectively. In the 2v, Kansas crossed the finish line in 8:09.64 for the victory, with the Mustangs trailing at 8:17.36. In the 3v, Texas posted a 7:33.7, Kansas finished in 7:55.5 and SMU rounded out the group at 8:40.6.

"The 2v and 3v just came together on Tuesday so that's a different group, so to be able to have them come together and race the way they did is incredible," Wright added.

SMU and Kansas were scheduled to race Varsity 4s, but did not take the course due to wind conditions.

"The conditions weren't the greatest, obviously, and I'm disappointment that the 4s race got canceled, but safety is our number one priority," Wright said.

The Ponies next host Tulsa for the annual Lawless Cup on April 18. Races are slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT. Check SMUMustangs.com for updates and a live results link.

"I'm excited about it [Tulsa], we're going to control what we can," Wright said. "That is everything that we have within ourselves to make ourselves go fast. What I know is that if we come together and put our best foot forward every single day I think we'll be well prepared."
