SMU Places Seventh At Longhorn Invitational

Marten wins triple jump

AUSTIN, Texas -- The SMU track & field team competed in the Longhorn Invitational at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Saturday. The meet was SMU's last competition before the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship.

"This meet provided the opportunity we have been looking for in the ballistic events. Nice warm weather, fast track, great competition and short travel day," said head coach Dave Wollman. "Every single athlete from the sprint group, the throwers and the jumpers stepped it up a level. It was an awesome day!"

The Mustangs finished seventh out of 18 schools. Host Texas won the meet.

Freshman Isabella Marten headlined the Mustangs' day, taking first in the triple jump (13.09m). The win was Marten's third this outdoor season. Marten also placed fourth in the long jump (6.07m).

"Bella marten had an awesome double with a huge personal best in the long jump and the best ever series average in the triple jump," said Wollman. "She is the class of the field in the AAC."

In sprints, Stephanie Kalu ran season-best times in the 100-meter (11.34) and the 200-meter (23.57). Kalu finished fourth in the 100-meter and eighth in the 200-meter.

Craishia Washington and Rachel Scruggs also ran in sprints for the Mustangs. Washington finished 24th in the 200-meter (24.63), while Scruggs placed 43rd in the 200-meter (25.34) and ran a season-best in the 400-meter (55.16), finishing ninth.

Five Mustangs ran in the 1,500-meter, led by Karoline Skatteboe finishing eighth (4:30.01). Shanoah Souza followed in 13th (4:35.51) and Agnes Sjostrom finished 14th (4:36.74). Caitlin Keen (17th, 4:38.81) and Claire Trotter (28th, 4:56.81) rounded out the SMU five.

Anna Novosadova was SMU's top hurdler in Austin, crossing the finish line 27th in the 100-meter (15.00) and 15th in the 400-meter (1:05.51). Lucija Cvitanovic also ran in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing 30th (15.25).

In throwing events, Rayann Chin secured a top-five finish in the discus, placing fifth (50.72m). Also in the discus, Tochi Nlemchi finished ninth (48.24) and Jacquetta Cannon finished 18th (35.64m). Chin also placed sixth in the hammer throw (53.94m), while Nlemchi (5th, 15.43m) and Cannon (12th, 13.07m) competed in the shot put.

"I am extremely happy with the fitness level going into finals and we will now turn our energy and attention to taking care of business in the classroom," said Wollman. "The majority of the team will be ready for a big meet in two weeks and I am excited about our prospects."

SMU will have next weekend off, before traveling to Storrs, Connecticut for the The American Championship May 14-17.
