SMU Tied For 15th At NCAA Championship, Round Three Play Suspended
DeChambeau leads individual medalist race
May 31, 2015
BRADENTON, Fla. (SMU/NCAA) - The SMU Mustangs shot a 3-over par 291 in the third round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday, moving them into a tie for 15th with Washington on the team leaderboard. Lightning in the area of the Concession Golf Club prevented the later groups from finishing their rounds, so the Mustangs will have to wait until tomorrow to learn if they will advance to the final round of stroke play.
The top 15 squads and best nine individuals not on a qualifying team after three rounds of stroke play will move on to the fourth and final round. The best eight teams after the fourth round advance to the match play quarterfinals on Tuesday. Third round play will resume at 7 a.m. ET/6 a.m. CT tomorrow. The individual national champion will be crowned after the fourth round of stroke play.
SMU junior Bryson DeChambeau maintained his lead in the individual medalist race, posting an even-par 72 on Sunday. DeChambeau leads the tournament by one shot over UAB's Paul Dunne, who shot a 69 in the third round. Three players are tied for third at 4-under.
The Mustangs' top third-round score came from junior Ryan Burgess, who carded a 1-under 71 with four birdies. Burgess bogeyed his first hole of the day, but rebounded immediately with two straight birdies on holes 2-3. Fellow junior Austin Smotherman was 1-under through 13 holes, but finished the day with a 1-over 73. Sophomore Andrew Buchanan provided SMU with its final counting score with a 3-over 75.
SMU will enter Sunday tied with Washington for the 15th and final transition spot. Depending on the final results from round three, a playoff will be used to resolve any ties. The playoff would take place immediately after round three is completed tomorrow. The fourth round will begin 30-45 minutes after any necessary playoff, but will start no earlier than 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
"We are great, we are only in this position because of yesterday," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said about his team's predicament going into Monday. "We are looking forward to a potential playoff tomorrow."
Georgia is at the top of the leaderboard entering Sunday, followed by USC, Illinois, LSU, Vanderbilt, Texas and USF in positions 2-7. UCLA and Georgia Tech are tied for eighth, with TCU two shots behind the last match play qualifying position in 10th place.
The two closest teams to SMU and Washington (+26) that have yet to finish their third rounds are Florida State (+19, 11th place) and Auburn (+23, tied for 12th), who both have three golfers that will play tomorrow. Oklahoma State (+32, tied for 19th) is the nearest team behind 15th place still working on their third round.
SMU reached the match play quarterfinals one year ago, falling to eventual national champion Alabama, 3-2. The Mustangs won their only men's golf national title in 1954, and have never had an individual medalist.
