DeChambeau Named PING First-Team All-American
Junior co-captain is SMU's first men's golf NCAA individual national champion

June 2, 2015

DALLAS (SMU/GCAA) -- SMU junior Bryson DeChambeau was named a PING First-Team All-America honoree, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday morning. The recognition comes the day after DeChambeau became SMU's first NCAA men's golf individual national champion, winning at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, with an 8-under par final score.

DeChambeau placed first in the 156-player field, posting par-or-better rounds in all four stages of the tournament. The Clovis, California, native won by one stroke over the No. 4-ranked amateur player in the world, Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington. DeChambeau went 3-under par over his final seven holes to regain the lead, finishing his final round with a 1-under 71. DeChambeau took the lead on the second day, carding a 5-under 67 with five birdies and an eagle.

The Mustangs' co-captain has had a stellar year of golf. After winning the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship in 2014 and placing ninth at last year's NCAA Championship, DeChambeau represented the USA twice during the summer, going to England for the Palmer Cup and traveling to Japan to help lead the USA to a win at the World Amateur Team Championships. He won his first collegiate event of the season in his first appearance, taking first at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in October.

DeChambeau led the Mustangs to a pair of team victories this season, tying UAB for the win at The Goodwin and tying Illinois for first at the NCAA Noblesville Regional. He closed his season with four consecutive top-five finishes and totaled six overall. Overall, DeChambeau had an average score of 70.61 and finished at par or better in 75 percent of his rounds.

DeChambeau was a Second-Team All-American last year. Both he and fellow junior Austin Smotherman were named to the PING All-Central Region team on Saturday.
