Women's Golf Announces 2015-16 Schedule
SMU begins play at the 2015 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational on Sept. 7

July 20, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) -- SMU women’s golf will take part in 10 tournaments throughout the 2015-16 season, four in the fall and six in the spring, prior to the American Athletic Conference Championships in April, head coach Jeanne Sutherland announced Monday.

SMU was the runner up in The American last season, and Sutherland thinks this tournament slate can help them contend once again.

“We’re very happy with the schedule we built for the 2015-16 season,” Sutherland said. “We return to Austin, San Antonio and Phoenix for great events and we’ve added five new events to our schedule.”

SMU will begin play on Sept. 7 at the 2015 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational hosted by Kansas State.

The Mustangs will then head north to take part in the 2nd Annual East & West Match Play Challenge co-hosted by the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin in Verona, Wisconsin.

“We will be defending champs at the East & West Match Play Challenge, which will be a lot of fun,” Sutherland said.

Last year, the Mustangs had a strong showing at the tournament, placing first and beating quality opponents, Ohio State and UC Davis, in the final two rounds.

The Mustangs will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with trips to the 2015 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas (Oct. 19-20), and the 2015 Alamo Invitational in Memory of Marby S. Kauth in San Antonio, Texas (Oct. 25-27).

SMU will pick right back up on Feb. 12 when they will compete in the 2016 Florida State Match Up in Tallahassee, Florida, beginning a stretch where the Mustangs play in four straight tournaments outside of Texas.

Following the Florida State Match Up, SMU will participate in the 2016 Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Arizona. (Feb. 21-22), the 2016 SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. (March 5-6), and The Clover Cup in Mesa, Arizona. (March 11-13).

SMU will then host The DAC/SMU Invitational in Dallas on April 1. Last season, the Mustangs finished 10th in their home tournament against top competition.

The Mustangs will finish up their regular season schedule at The Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas (April 8-9).

“All (of these tournaments) will provide us opportunities to play against top-ranked teams on great golf courses,” Sutherland said.

SMU will finish their season at The American Athletic Conference Championships on April 17 in Hammock Beach, Florida. where the Mustangs finished runner-up a season ago. Sutherland believes the schedule will prepare her team for a strong postseason run.

“This should provide us with the competition and experience needed to challenge at the NCAA Championships, which is our goal,” Sutherland said.

The NCAA Regionals begin on May 5, and the NCAA Championships will start on May 20 in Eugene, Oregon.
