Mustangs Wrap Up Summer Competition At FINA World Champs

KAZAN, Russia (SMU) – Six Mustangs concluded action at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, on Sunday with Rachel Nicol advancing beyond preliminaries in all four of her events as part of the team from Canada.
Coming off silver and bronze medal performances at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Nicol advanced to the semifinals of both the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke, and also helped Canada qualify for the finals in the 4x100 medley and 4x100 mixed medley relays. Her highest placement came in the 4x100 medley where Canada placed sixth.
In the mixed event, Nicol swam breaststroke in the preliminary round, but did not swim in the finals. The 50 breast was her highest individual placement at 10th, following an 11th place finish in the 100 meter distance.
Nina Rangelova also made a trip to semis, placing 16th in the 200-meter freestyle. Her Worlds trip follows an outstanding Bulgarian National Championship where she went eight-for-eight, winning each final she competed in. Rangelova also competed in the 50-meter freestyle in which she won her heat, and was also 23rd in the 100-meter freestyle prelims.
Isabella Arcila continued to break Colombian records as she did in Toronto, coming away with three National Records as part of both the 4x100 (17th) and 4x200 (16th) freestyle relays, as well as the 4x100 mixed medley (12th). Individually, Arcila competed in the 50-meter freestyle, coming in third in her heat, and also the 100-meter freestyle where she placed 41st.
SMU newcomer Matea Samardzic represented Croatia in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events earning her highest prelims placement of 26th in the 200. In the 100, she finished 44th overall.
On the men’s side, Julian Fletcher (Bermuda) and Christian Scherubl (Austria) each represented their countries in a pair of events. Fletcher once again competed in breaststroke preliminaries, placing 49th in the 200 and 52nd in the 100. Scherubl, who was named the 2015 American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Meet in his first season, was 57th in the 100-meter freestyle, and 17th as part of Austria’s 4x200 meter freestyle relay.
The World Championships completed international competition for the Mustangs this summer, and the teams will now turn their focus to NCAA competition. On the women’s side, the Ponies look to repeat as AAC Champions and improve on a 31st place finish from the 2015 NCAA Championships, while the men will vie for their first conference title as part of The American.
