PonyFans.com VIDEO: Men's soccer blanks Sacramento StateFrom SMUMustangs.com: Smith, Garcia Propel Mustangs to 2-0 Victory in Home Opener Mustangs Defeat Sacramento State, 2-0, In Home Opener Friday Night Aug. 28, 2015 DALLAS (SMU) -- Freshman Caleb Smith scored his first collegiate goal in the 27th minute, while Stanton Garcia scored an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to lead the SMU men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over non-conference opponent Sacramento State on Friday night. In his debut as a head coach, Kevin Hudson got his first career win under his belt. It was the first time since 2010 that the Mustangs have won a season opener. "Ultimately, it's not about me," Hudson said. "For me personally, I'm excited but it's about them. It puts us off on the right foot and I'm happy for them. At the same time, we're going to need to play better if we're going to continue to win games." Smith got the scoring started for the Mustangs in the middle of the first half off a cross from Mauro Cichero and cut back to strike a shot 12 yards out. Cichero and sophomore Jared Rice were credited with the assist. With eight minutes remaining in the match, sophomore Stanton Garcia scored the insurance goal after he collected a pass from Cichero and John Lujano and slipped the ball into the lower right hand corner beyond the outstretched arms of Sacramento State goalkeeper James Del Curto. The Ponies outshot the Hornets 8-5 in the contest, including 5 shots on goal with Cichero leading the team with three. "We weren't great but for the first game of the year it showed a lot of character and heart for the group to see the game against a challenging opponent," Hudson said. "I think tactically they gave us a bit of trouble at first until we got the right information to the players on how to break it down. Overall, I can't lose sight of the victory and we had a lot of young guys who hadn't been through it." Goalkeeper Michael Nelson collected two saves in the net for SMU while Sacramento State goalkeeper Del Curto recorded three saves. The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 30 when they host UIC at 5 p.m. to wrap up their home opening weekend.
