PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – Morgan Heise was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording 80 digs in three matches during the first weekend of competition. The junior had 36 digs against No. 17 Arizona, which ranks tied for fourth in a match at SMU.
Heise, the 2014 conference Libero of the Year, averaged 7.27 digs per set. She also had three aces and six assists to lead SMU to a 2-1 record on opening weekend. The Hempstead, Texas, native set a school record with 626 digs last season, and has 1,112 in her career. She earned Player of the Week honors four times last season.
Janelle Giordano was named to the Player of the Week Honor Roll for her offensive performance. The junior middle blocker led the Mustangs with a .444 attack percentage, scoring 32 kills with just four errors in 63 attempts. She led SMU in kills in two of the three matches. Giordano had 11 kills with just one error against Arizona, and finished with a career-high 13 in the opener against UTEP.
The Mustangs, who went 26-6 in 2014, play three matches at the Lobo Classic Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. SMU plays Cal State-Fullerton Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Saturday’s slate includes an 11:30 a.m. CT matchup with Santa Clara before SMU takes on host New Mexico at 8:30 p.m. CT.
