DALLAS (SMU) – Five different players scored as the Mustangs picked up their first win of the season against Texas Southern on Sunday at Westcott Field.
SMU (1-2-1) went on the offensive, taking 23 shots and beating the Tigers, 5-1.
It was the most goals in a regular season game for SMU since August 23, 2013 when the Mustangs beat Louisiana-Monroe, 6-1.
The Mustangs attack was on point throughout the match. Tied at one, with only five minutes left in the first half, Blair Thorpe sent a corner kick into the box, and Claire Oates headed it into the goal to give SMU the 2-1 advantage. It was Oates’ second goal of the season, and her eighth overall as a Mustang.
SMU continued to put the pressure on Texas Southern (1-3) as Hannah Fleet scored three minutes into the second period.
It was not long before the Mustangs would add to their lead as Vanessa Valadez scored on the Texas Southern keeper for her second goal of the season. Valadez finished with one goal and one assist.
Head coach Chris Petrucelli was pleased with how the Mustangs played on the offensive end.
“The attacking part of the field was pretty good, Vanessa caused a good amount of problems, “Petrucelli said. “On the right, I thought Hannah was pretty dangerous.â€
Sophomore Chinelo Odobulu used her speed to consistently beat the Tigers defense. The forward had four shots off the bench and scored her first goal of the season in the 65th minute, to take the lead 5-1.
Lauren Guerra, who was second in goals scored last season, had her first goal of 2015 as she took a cross from Valadez and slid it past the goalkeeper. Midfielder Paige Jacobs made her first start of the season and had two assists on the night.
21 Mustangs entered the match tonight, and Petrucelli saw it as a way to make the team stronger throughout the roster.
“What we did was create a little depth within the team,†Petrucelli said. “We have a number of players we can now go to and even a number of different players who can start. This game puts us in a better situation than I think we were in a week ago.â€
SMU will hit the road to take on Rice on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Houston, Texas.
