DALLAS (SMU) – Seniors Avery Acker and Abbey Bybel, as well as junior Morgan Heise, have been named team captains for the 2015 volleyball season, head coach Lisa Seifert announced Monday.

"I think the three of them will provide a good balance in leading our team through the adversity that can occur within a season,” Seifert explained. “I trust that the three of them will continue to work hard in the gym and to execute what they know to be right both on and off the court."

Acker has been a team captain for the past two seasons, and was named American Athletic Conference Setter of the Year in 2013. She is closing in on 3,000 assists for her career, and led the league in assists as a junior last season. Acker is a two-time All-America Honorable Mention award recipient, and had 136 assists in the first three matches of the 2015 campaign.

Bybel is has 850 kills for her career, and was second on the team last season with 355 kills, trailing only Caroline Young, who was selected as an All-America Honorable Mention honoree. Bybel led the team during the first weekend with 36 kills, and also had 35 digs, posting a pair of double-doubles.

Heise, who was honored as the 2014 conference Libero of the Year, was selected as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording 80 digs in week one. She set a school record with 626 digs last season, and had 36 against No. 17 Arizona Friday.

The Mustangs went 26-6 last season, and posted a 2-1 record to start the 2015 season. SMU competes in the Lobo Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., Friday and Saturday, facing Cal State-Fullerton, Santa Clara and New Mexico.
