DALLAS (SMU) -- Paige Jacobs scored her first goal of the season, but the Mustangs fell to Maryland, 2-1, on Sunday at Westcott Field.
In the 23rd minute, Lauren Guerra made a lead pass to Lissi Lonsberry, who then sent a cross into the box. Jacobs went step for step with Lissi and when the cross came in, Jacobs hit a first-time shot past the goalkeeper.
It was the first goal for Jacobs and the first assist for both Guerra and Lonsberry on the season.
“Great goal, great goal, nice buildup, ball to the end line, great service and Paige struck it really well,†head coach Chris Petrucelli said.
Late in the first half, Mustang goalkeeper Shannon Moroney kept the Terrapins off the board, making back-to-back saves, including a point-blank diving save.
Petrucelli was impressed by Moroney’s play today.
“I thought she made one big save there at the end of the first half,†Petrucelli said. “I thought she was really solid.â€
In the second half, Maryland’s Madison Turner and Alex Anthony scored 81 seconds apart to take the lead, 2-1. The Mustangs responded and had several scoring chances near the end.
Chinelo Odobulu used her pace to get by a Terrapins defender and made a cross into the box, but the Mustangs could not get a head on to it. With 15 seconds left in the match, Vanessa Valadez took a shot with pace from the edge of the 18, but it was blocked by a Maryland defender.
“We certainly fought hard at the end and got in to the box a couple times with some chances,†Petrucelli said. “You can’t question the effort, the effort is there and they're working hard at it. They're getting better at it.â€
