SMU and Portland Play to 0-0 Draw
Mustangs outshoot Portland, 25-12

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team played Portland to a 0-0 non-conference draw at Westcott Field on Thursday evening. The Mustangs, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA National Coaches Poll for the second week, sit at 2-1-2 on the season, while the Pilots sit at 1-3-1 in non-conference action.
The Mustangs outshot the Pilots 25-12 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal, with freshman Emil Cuello registering a season-high and team-high eight shots. Mauro Cichero tallied four while Bryce Clark and Stanton Garcia added three of their own.
“We have to be more ruthless,†Head Coach Kevin Hudson. “We played at home and it’s a result you need to win. I thought we had them where we wanted them. We had the ball and created a lot of chances and just couldn’t find the goal.â€
Through 110 minutes of play, SMU took a total of five corner kicks while Portland took three.
In the net for the Mustangs, goalkeeper Michael Nelson registered five saves of the five shots on goal he faced. The shutout was Nelson’s second of the season, the last one being in the 2-0 victory over Sacramento State in the Mustang’s home opener on Aug. 28.
