Volleyball Earns Votes In AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll
SMU garners votes for second straight season; Mustangs rank 30th

LEXINGTON, Ky. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team received 33 votes in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll this week, earning votes in the poll for the first time this season after a 3-1 victory over then-No. 18 San Diego. The 33 votes would place SMU 30th in the national rankings.
The Mustangs are 7-2 this season, with the only two losses to Arizona and UCLA, ranked No. 16 and No. 14 in this week’s poll, respectively. SMU had won six straight matches before falling to then-No. 17 UCLA in the championship match at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
SMU, receiving votes in the polls for the second consecutive season, is led by senior Avery Acker, and junior Morgan Heise. Acker, the 2013 American Athletic Conference Setter of the Year, ranks eighth in the NCAA with 11.59 assists per set. Heise, the 2014 conference Libero of the Year, is seventh in the country with 5.71 digs per set. Each has been named conference Player of the Week once this season. Janelle Giordano is also 32nd in the nation with 1.38 blocks per set, and is hitting .385, 68th in the NCAA.
The Mustangs host the DoubleTree Invitational Friday at Saturday. SMU faces Clemson Friday at 1 p.m. and rival TCU at 7:30 p.m. SMU takes on UTSA in the final match of the tournament Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
