The Mustangs improved to 3-2-2 while the Huskies fell to 3-4 on the season. SMU redshirt junior Brenden Lee opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a diving header off a throw in from teammate Jared Rice. The assist was Rice’s fourth assist of the season, a team high. In the 40th minute, freshman Emil Cuello tallied his first collegiate goal when he collected a pass from Kevin Meinecke and placed the ball in the lower right hand corner of the goal from 20 yards out. The Mustangs struck again in the 43rd minute when senior Idi Camara secured the victory with an insurance goal, his first of the season. The Denver, Colorado native placed a header past the HBU goalkeeper, Philip Poser, off a pass from teammates Meinecke and Cuello. “It was a comprehensive showing in the first half,†Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. “That was exactly what we wanted to do and I was proud of the 45 minutes they played. We’re at a point in the season where you can establish yourself as a very good team, a good team or an average team and the performance they put in tonight bodes well for the future, but it’s just one step.†The Huskies’ lone goal came in the 87th minute when Erick Aragon collected a deflected shot off Mustang goalkeeper, Michael Nelson, and found the back of the net. The Mustangs outshot the Huskies, 23-8, with 17 shots coming in the first half. Mauro Cichero, Stanton Garcia, Christian Boorom, Camara and Rice each tallied three shots apiece while A.J. Jeffries attempted two of his own. Nelson registered one save of the one shot on goal he faced while Poser registered nine saves of the 12 shots on goal he faced. Up next, the Mustangs face UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. Ticket information, go to http://www.smumustangs.com/tickets/.
