Sept. 21, 2015
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) – SMU men’s soccer player Emil Cuello has been named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for his two goals and two assists in a 2-0 weekend against Houston Baptist and UC Irvine, league officials announced today. The Mustangs improved to 4-2-2 on the season.
Cuello, a freshman from Orem, Utah, scored his first collegiate goal in the 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist after he collected a pass from teammate Kevin Meinecke and placed the ball in the lower right hand corner of the goal. Cuello also recorded an assist on an Idi Camara goal after he played a long ball through to Meinecke who found Camara waiting inside the six yard box for the finish.
In a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine, Cuello scored what proved to be the match winner in the 40th minute after he headed the ball in off a cross from teammate Mauro Cichero. The goal was Cuello’s second of the season to round out his point total to six over the weekend.
