Acker Named AVCA National Player Of The Week
Senior setter is first Mustang and first member of The American to earn the award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (SMU) – Avery Acker was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, officials announced Tuesday, becoming the first SMU player and first member of the American Athletic Conference to earn the honor.

Acker led the Mustangs to the DoubleTree Invitational championship with a 3-0 record, including a win over rival TCU, SMU’s third win over a top 50 team this season, according to the Pablo rankings. The senior averaged 13.92 assists per set in the tournament, climbing to second in the country with a 12.20 assist/set average this season. She also set an American Athletic Conference record with 67 assists against TCU.

The Poth, Texas, native guided the Mustangs to a .287 attack percentage, including a .404 attack percentage against Clemson, which is the fifth highest in program history. She assisted five Mustangs to double-digit kills for the first time this season against TCU. Acker also had 39 digs, recording two double-doubles to take her season total to eight.

Acker, a two-time All-America Honorable Mention award winner and 2013 conference Setter of the Year, was also named American Athletic Conference Offensive Player for the second time this season. She has been named Player of the Week four time in her career.

SMU is 10-2 this season, with a win over then-No. 18 San Diego and losses to UCLA and Arizona, both ranked in the top 15 this week. The Mustangs, receiving 63 total votes to rank 26th in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, begin American Athletic Conference matches this weekend, starting at Houston Friday at 7 p.m.
