Cichero and Cuello Earn Conference Player of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (American/SMU) – Following a 2-0 week, SMU men’s soccer players Mauro Cichero and Emil Cuello were honored by the league as the Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Norman, Oklahoma, native Cichero scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over UCF to keep the Mustangs’ five game win streak alive. Cichero, who has started every match in front for SMU this season, also helped the Mustangs to a 2-1 victory over Oral Roberts by tallying three shots, two on goal. Cichero leads the Mustangs in goals (6) and shots (40), and is second in assists (4).
Freshman Cuello was named the conference Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after tallying three points in the 2-0 week. Cuello scored his third goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, in a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts and tallied an assist on Cichero’s game-winning goal in Friday’s win over UCF.
SMU boasts a 7-2-2 record overall, 2-0 in The American, and is currently tied for first with USF in the league standings. The Mustangs lead the conference in points (62), shots (166), goals (20), assists (22), corner kicks (61) and assists per game (22).
The Ponies play at Memphis Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in an AAC matchup.
