Heise and Bula Sweep Conference Weekly Awards
Heise earns third defensive award of the season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – The Mustangs swept the American Athletic Conference volleyball Player of the Week awards for the second time in three weeks, with Cailin Bula earning the offensive award, becoming the third different Mustang to earn a weekly honor. Morgan Heise was named Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Bula scored a career-high 20 kills against Tulsa, and finished with nine in three sets against East Carolina, averaging 4.14 per set. The senior hit .397, with just four errors in 63 attack attempts in the two matches. She hit .500 against ECU, helping SMU finish with a .429 attack percentage, third highest in a match at SMU.
Heise recorded 26 digs in a three-set win against East Carolina, third most in a three-set match at SMU. Rachel Giubilato had 29 in a three-set loss against Cornell in 2005, when sets were played to 30 points, and Sidney Stewart had 27 in a win at UAB in 2011. Heise also had 21 against Tulsa, averaging 6.71 digs per set in the two matches. The junior has 337 digs this season, and ranks in the top 10 nationally with 5.71 digs per set.
The duo led SMU to a 2-0 record for the week, improving to 13-3 overall, and 3-1 in The American. The Mustangs host Temple Friday at 7 p.m., as SMU celebrates 20 years of volleyball on the Hilltop. A birthday celebration will follow the match in the Miller Event Center. SMU concludes a four-match homestand Sunday against Connecticut at 12 p.m.
