Oct. 6, 2015
PROVIDENCE (The American/SMU) – Following a season-opening victory at the North Texas Relays over the weekend, junior Maddie Hoch and sophomore Madeline Wainman swept the first American Athletic Conference awards of the 2015-16 season.
Hoch, a transfer from Minnesota, helped the Mustangs to three of their eight wins at the UNT Relays. The Lebanon, Pennsylvania, native swam anchor of the 800 freestyle relay posting a 1:49.58 split to edge out SMU’s closest competition by over 13 seconds. She also led off both the 400 free and 1500 free relays. In butterfly action, Hoch anchored the 300 distance, clocking a 53.3 split.
This is the first honor for Hoch in The American, and the fifth overall for a Mustang since the inception of the league in 2013.
Coquitlam, British Columbia, native Wainman posted a career best 248.00 in the 1-meter to contribute to the Mustangs’ team score. Wainman joined up with teammate Lauren Lamb to post a combined 465, which led the field. In 3-meter Wainman scored 251.00 helping the Ponies to a diving sweep. This is the second time the sophomore has been honored by The American, earning her first weekly award on Jan. 13, 2015. That date was also the last time the Mustangs swept conference accolades.
SMU is back in action Oct. 16-17 for the annual SMU Classic in Mansfield, Texas. The event includes top competition in UCLA, Florida State, Missouri, Louisville and TCU. Each team will send eight swimmers and one diver to vie for the event title. Action kicks off at 6:30 p.m. both days.
