Oct. 12, 2015
LEXINGTON, Ky. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team is receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the third time this season after a pair of 3-0 wins, including a victory over Temple to give the Owls their first conference loss, to climb to the top of the American Athletic Conference standings with a 5-1 league record.
The Mustangs are 15-3 overall and first received votes in the poll after a win against then-No. 18 San Diego. SMU climbed to as high at 26th, based on the number of votes received, with its only to losses at the time coming to Arizona and UCLA, both ranked in the top 15 at the time of the match.
SMU fell out of the polls after a road loss to Houston in the first conference match of the season, but has since won five straight, including three consecutive three-set matches. Senior setter Avery Acker is second in the NCAA with 12.42 assists per set, and has the offense hitting .237, second in The American.
Abbey Bybel leads the team with 193 kills, and Janelle Giordano is hitting .388, second in the conference, with 167 kills. Giordano also has a conference-high 96 blocks, 10th in the country. Morgan Heise is seventh in the NCAA with 5.69 digs per set. The duo is a big reason SMU is holding opponents to a conference-low .154 attack percentage, 22nd in the nation.
SMU plays at defending American Athletic Conference champion UCF Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, and finishes the road trip at USF Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
