Mustangs Win 3-0 At East Carolina For Fourth Straight Sweep
Bula and Bybel each score double-digit kills in win

GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) – Cailin Bula scored a match-high 12 kills, and Abbey Bybel added 11, as SMU defeated East Carolina 3-0 in Williams Arena Sunday afternoon, earning a fourth straight sweep and the seventh in the last nine matches.
The Mustangs (21-3, 11-1 American Athletic Conference) won the third set 25-14 to complete the sweep. Leading by one, 8-7, SMU scored the next three on kills by Bula, Bybel and Janelle Giordano for a four-point lead. East Carolina (10-13, 3-0 The American) never got within three points the rest of the set. The Mustangs ended the set on a 6-2 run, with Bula scoring three kills during the stretch to take the match lead away from Bybel.
Bula hit .417 with 12 kills and just two errors in 24 attempts, and Bybel had 11 kills with three errors, hitting .276. Katie Hegarty finished with eight kills, and Kristen Stehling added six with three blocks. Giordano had five of SMU’s eight blocks, and scored five kills. The Mustangs hit .265 as a team, scoring 47 kills. ECU hit .104 with 33 kills. Morgan Heise recorded 24 digs for the Mustangs, tied for fourth most in a three-set match at SMU. Avery Acker finished with 44 assists and seven digs.
The Pirates kept it close throughout the first set, but the Mustangs scored kills on five of their final six points to win, 25-21, finishing with 13 kills in the set. ECU was within two points a majority of the set, but the final push at the end was enough for SMU to take the victory, despite hitting just .154 in the set. East Carolina had 28 digs in the set to limit the SMU offense. The Mustangs held the Pirates to a .122 attack percentage in the opening set, with Heise posting nine digs.
The Mustangs used a 7-1 run to break open the second set, taking a 19-11 lead en route to a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Bybel and Stehling combined for five points during the stretch, teaming up for a block and scoring two kills each. The Pirates never recovered from the run, which started with SMU leading by just two, 12-10. ECU hit just .135 in the set with 11 kills, while the Mustangs scored 18 kills with a .432 attack percentage.
SMU plays at Memphis Friday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs conclude the four-match road stretch at second-place Cincinnati Sunday.
