DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 49 SMU women’s tennis team defeated American Athletic Conference opponent Connecticut, 6-1, at Turpin Stadium. The win comes after Thursday’s loss to TCU and moves the Mustangs to 8-1 overall this season and 1-0 in conference play.

SMU won all of their singles matches, led by junior Macie Elliott (No. 6) who returned to the singles lineup after a 3-0 start to win 6-2, 6-2 win over UConn’s Zaina Zaki. No. 58 Hristina Dishkova (No. 1) won her match against Srna Stosljevic 6-3, 6-4 after suffering her first loss of the season against TCU.

Senior Yana Erkeeva (No. 3) was next to win her singles match as she defeated Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva 6-4, 6-2 then the match was clinched by Dasha Sharapova (No. 4) when she earned a comeback win over Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Vaszilisza Bulgakova (No. 2) won her match against Emma Alderman 7-6, 7-6 and Mary Wright earned a hard fought, three-set victory over Shea Flanagan 5-7, 6-1, 7-6.

The Mustangs needed four singles wins to clinch the match after UConn won the doubles point to start the match. Bulgakova and Dishkova won their match against Stosljevic and Fitz-Randolph 7-5 but the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs each dropped their matches.

SMU women’s tennis will hit the road over the next couple of weeks, starting with a trip to Kansas to face three ranked opponents in No. 21 Wichita State, No. 23 Kansas and No. 70 Kansas State starting on March 3.
