Mustangs Pick Up A Season-High Fourth Straight Victory

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team improved to 9-4, 1-1 after a 4-1 victory over Wichita State on Friday evening inside the Turpin Stadium.
SMU got the first point on the scoreboard, continuing its dominance in doubles play. Juniors Hunter and Yates Johnson won quickly on court one 6-1, to improve to 18-5 as a pair this spring. Senior Nate Lammons and junior Arkadijs Slobodkinscollected their 11th win as a pair, winning 6-2 and giving SMU an early 1-0 lead.
“It was a very hard fought match, 4-1 doesn’t represent the match with two tough three setters on court one and two in singles that was ongoing,” said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. “I thought our guys did a great job battling and we’re playing better and better at every position and it’s very exciting.”
In singles play Yates got the scoring going, defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-4. After Wichita State picked up its only point of the match on court four, the Mustangs went on to win on courts three and five from sophomores Samm Butlerand Ronald Slobodchikov, respectively, to earn the fourth point and claim the victory over the Shockers.
SMU will play conference-foe No. 20 Tulsa on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. CT inside the SMU Tennis Complex.
