Butler Earns Conference Player Of The Week
Sophomore Collected Four Wins On Sunday

March 15, 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) - SMU’s Samm Butler was named the American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Tuesday, after registering a perfect 4-0 combined record to help the Mustangs sweep a doubleheader on Sunday.

Butler picked up his first two wins against Prairie View A&M. In doubles action, Butler teamed up withMarkus Kerner to defeat Christian Waldron and Sergio Avella, 6-4. The Marlborough, United Kingdom, native continued the momentum into singles play beating Avella, 6-3, 6-0.

After a brief break, SMU hosted its second match of the day against Northern Colorado. Butler paired up with Kerner once more, this time to defeat Eric Schuermans and Hayden Cramer, 6-1. Butler sustained his play and won his second singles match of the day against Schuermans, 6-3, 6-0.

The sophomore is riding a six-match win streak in singles play and has the third most singles wins on the team with 14. Butler is the second Mustang to earn conference player of the week. Nate Lammonswas tabbed player of the week on March 1.

SMU will be back in action today when they host UMBC at 6 p.m. CT.
