Thornton Named AAC Rookie of the Week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – After scoring her first career hat trick, freshman forward Allie Thornton was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, league officials announced Monday. In two games, the rookie posted seven shots with four on goal, in 99 minutes on the pitch.
Thornton led SMU to a 6-1 victory over Abilene Christian, scoring three goals on five total shots, with three shots on goal. She opened scoring in the fifth minute, heading a cross from Jessica Cooley into the far, lower corner. In the 51st minute, Thornton won a one-on-one with starting goalkeeper, Kelsey Dombrowski, and netted her second of the night, by way of through balls from Hannah Fleet and Cooley. Under a minute later (52nd minute), Fleet beat two defenders and fed Thornton who completed the first SMU hat trick since Claire Oates on Sept. 25, 2014.
The Arlington, Texas, native, has a conference-leading seven goals, and is tied for second in The American with 15 points. Entering the week, she is ranked third among all NCAA D1 players with 1.17 goals per game, sixth in the nation with seven goals, and ninth with 2.5 points per game. Thornton also leads the AAC in points per game (2.50) and goals per game (1.17).
SMU continues its three-game homestand Friday hosting Saint Louis at 6:30 p.m. The Mustangs close out their non-conference home slate with Washington at 7 p.m. Sunday.
